Where Does the Construction Industry Stand Now Months Into Pandemic?

In April, we posted this blog about the impacts of COVID-19 on the construction industry. While much of Georgia was in ‘lockdown’ mode at that time, the industry continued to operate as construction was – and is – considered essential. In the months since then, we’ve seen a ‘new normal’ set in as we navigate these times including moving to mostly virtual meetings, limiting number of workers on job sites, and upping safety precautions.

According to an article posted on ENR, construction employment numbers bounced back in a major way from April’s losses. The industry added 464,000 jobs just in May. The contribution from the industry resulted in a 2.5 million increase in overall employment in May.

Ken Simonson, the Associated General Contractors of America’s chief economist, said in a statement, “The huge pickup in construction employment in May is good news and probably reflects the industry’s widespread receipt of Paycheck Protection Program loans and the loosening of restrictions on business activity in some states.”
