Project Update: Georgia World Congress Center Re-roof

In 2021, our Albion team, along with the design firm, Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc., was selected to provide design-build construction services to the Georgia World Congress Center Authority and Georgia State Financing and Investment Commission for the Roof Replacement at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, GA. The goal is to ensure these facilities function and perform as intended and remain in good operating condition. The area to be replaced is approximately 1,500,000 total square feet of combined surface area. This project consists of the removal and demolition of the existing roof and insulation down to the metal decking, installation of R-20 polyisocyanates insulation and fully adhered polyester reinforced 80-mil thick KEE modified PVC membrane with a low VOC adhesive system, installation of new 24-gauge Kynar finished steel copings, walkways, walk pads to all rooftop equipment, disconnect and reconnect equipment as required to perform work and meet code and roof manufacturer requirements.

Albion will remove and replace expansion joint covers, expansion joints, flashing, pitch pans, and strainers. We are replacing any damaged nailers and blocking in order to modify them to meet requirements for the new system. We are also modifying air handling unit curbs and penthouse curbs to meet required height due to increase in insulation height. New sumps around electrical drains are being installed while retaining existing drain levels. We are providing temporary water diversion for drainage the entirety of the roof replacement and continue to inspect and confirm that existing roof drains are clean and clear.

The project is broken down into three phases. The first phase began in March 2021 and was completed in October of the following year. The second phase began in March of 2023 and wrapped in December of 2023. The final phase began last September and is currently in progress.

Assistant Project Manager, Faith Britton joined the Albion team in July 2023 and has dedicated her efforts to the GWCC Re-roof project. “Albion is committed to maintaining the highest quality and ensuring safety standards while adhering to scope, schedule, and budget,” said Britton. “We prepare for success through pre-planning, risk mitigation, continuous project reviews, and meeting project deadlines.  To hand over the finest deliverables, we are client-focused.  Our partnership with the Georgia World Congress Center allows us to create a successful business model and continually create raving fans.”
